UAB HEAD COACH Mike Anderson
On the game: "Well, this really was a character game today. We had some turnovers but Memphis is a good team and John Calipari does a great job with them, and they just would not go away, especially (Darius) Washington. He was playing unbelievable and then all of a sudden here comes (Rodney) Carney, and he is knocking shots down, and Washington continued to knock shots down along with Duane Erwin, who also did a good job. He (Erwin) was really their workhorse. It took everything we had to hold them off and I am proud of our guys because I saw the energy and heart and will to win today. They would not go away though."
On not starting either Squeaky Johnson and Demario Eddins" "Well sometimes guys can get complacent and you just have to juggle it up a little bit. I have always said that I have 10 or 12 starters and if you look at the guys that came in there, they did not do too bad. Again, this is a total team, and it was just that tonight. "
On the play of freshman Paul Delaney: "When you get a chance to show what you have on national TV, it is a great opportunity, and he has been playing well like that lately in practice. That is why I have the confidence to put him out there. He makes plays and the thing that I really like about him is that he gets at it defensively, because he is just so strong physically. So I was proud of him today."
MEMPHIS HEAD COACH JOHN CALIPARI
On the game: "UAB played a great game. They deserved to win that one - a terrific college basketball game."
On his team's first-half play: "Our freshman in the first half kind of got us out of whack. We were playing in a style where we weren't going to win the game. The good news is we came back in the second half and we played the game like we needed to play to win. If we wouldn't have gotten so far down at half, we might have had a little outcome."
On UAB: "UAB, especially in this building, is a terrific team. They played really well. We had two or three offensive rebound attempts that we didn't come up with, and those were critical. They forced us, especially in the first half, to have a ton of turnovers. They are very physical, body on body, and if you're not used to playing that way, you're going to turn it over some."
