BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Lee Moon, who has more than 30 years experience as a university athletics administrator and coach, including stints as a Director of Athletics at two Division I-A institutions, has been named Senior Associate Director of Athletics at UAB, according to an announcement by Blazer Director of Athletics Watson Brown.
A native of Roanoke, Va., Moon brings to UAB a depth of experience after an extensive career in athletics administration and coaching at the collegiate level.
Moon served as Athletics Director from 1996-2003 at the University of Wyoming where he oversaw the Cowboys' $15 million budget. Prior to that time, he held the position as AD at Marshall University from 1988-1996.
"When we began the process of trying to identify candidates to fill this position, I wanted experience as an administrator more than anything," said Brown. "I wanted to find someone who had run an athletic department and someone, ideally, who had been part of a building process at a school, a situation similar to our own. We now have that person in Lee Moon and we are extremely excited to have Lee coming on board with us."
Before going to Marshall, Moon spent three years at Kansas State, first as Assistant AD for Operations and then Associate Director Athletics.
Moon played football for the Virginia Military Institute and on the semi-pro level with the Roanoke Buckskins. He began his coaching career at Virginia's Staunton Military Academy and was a graduate assistant at the University of Virginia, where he earned a master's degree in education.
Moon later became an assistant coach at Duke from 1973-76 before moving back to the University of Virginia where he served on the coaching staff from 1976-81. From 1982-85, he was on the staff at Mississippi State before moving to Manhattan, Kansas where he served as Interim head football coach and assistant director of operations.
"When I decided to get back into athletics, I wanted to be involved at a place where I could make a difference," said Moon. "The programs where I have worked have had similar challenges (to UAB) and I feel I can bring something to the table to assist UAB in reaching that same kind of success. I am looking forward to working with Coach Brown, the staff and coaches to help UAB reach its goals."
Moon has two sons: Lee Moon, Jr., 27, a graduate assistant basketball coach at the University of Florida; and Brian, 24, now in his second year of medical school at West Virginia University.
