No. 21 UAB Falls In Overtime To Davidson, 1-0

DAVIDSON, N.C. ----- The Davidson men's soccer team outlasted No. 21 UAB, 1-0, in overtime of the final game of the Davidson Adidas Classic on Sunday afternoon. Junior defender John Latting, a native of Birmingham, Ala., scored the game-winner for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats (3-1) controlled the attack against the Blazers (1-3), outshooting the visiting team 20-7, including a 12-3 advantage in the second period.
Davidson goalkeeper Bart Creasman took care of any UAB threat, including two terrific stops in the final minute of regulation to ensure the game would be extended. Creasman ended the game with four saves on the evening, while A.J. Robles and Melford James combined to make four saves.
The game-winner was scored late in the first overtime, when a UAB foul set up a free kick for the Wildcats on the right side of the field deep in Blazer territory. Sophomore Cass Baltz sent a cross to the top of the box where senior defender Joey Bass came up with the ball. Bass sent a short pass forward to Latting who turned the drilled the shot past James for the game-winner.
"This was a good tournament and we played two well-coached and talented teams this weekend," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "For such a young team, it has been a good learning experience and hopefully we will learn and improve from our mistakes here. We had some chances at the end to win the game, but today just wasn't our day."
Davidson and No. 7 UNC Greensboro both went 2-0 in the Classic with Davidson earning the tournament title based on goal differential.
UAB's Leandro de Oliveira and Jerson Monteiro were named to the all-tournament team.
The Blazers will next play their first home game of the 2004 season when they host the UAB/La Quinta Classic On Sept. 17-19. The tournament will open on Friday when Western Kentucky squares off against Birmingham-Southern at 5 p.m., followed by UAB's first home game and C-USA match against Charlotte. On Sunday, the Blazers will face Western Kentucky at 2:30 p.m., following the Charlotte vs. Birmingham-Southern match at Noon.
