ATHENS, Ga. ----- Sophomore Laura Richards scored the game-winning goal at the 60:59 mark to lift the UAB women's soccer team over SEC foe Georgia, 1-0, in front of 1,256 fans here Saturday night. It marked the final exhibition game for the Blazers as they will open the 2004 regular season on Aug. 27 against Jacksonville State at West Campus Field. "I am very pleased with the win at their home field in front of a great crowd," UAB head coach Paul Harbin said. "(Goalkeeper) Katie Forbis made some great saves for us early on to keep the game tied. This was a good result against a very good and well-coached team. We struggled early in the game because of their style of play, but once we made adjustments, we became a lot more effective." The goal came when freshman forward Daelyn Richards squirted through the defense and passed the ball to a wide-open Laura Richards who was able to finish the game-winner. The Blazers outshot Georgia 17-16 on the night and had five corner kicks compared to just two for the Bulldogs. UAB will next play its 2004 season-opening game against Jacksonville State on Friday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. on West Campus Field. Following the Lady Blazers game, the UAB men's soccer team will play host to the U.S. Under-17 National Team.
