BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - No. 12 Southern Miss pushed across five runs in the top of the third inning en route to a 6-2 victory over UAB in Conference USA baseball action Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
Golden Eagle starter Anthony DeWitt (8-2) got the win for USM after pitching seven innings and allowing one run on seven hits. He walked two and struck out five.
Blazer starter Grant Addison (1-2) took the loss for UAB (21-22, 8-12 C-USA) after working a career-high six and one-third innings and allowing five runs, none of which were earned, on eight hits. He walked four and struck out three.
"We had a couple of opportunities throughout the game to drive in some runs and make it closer," said UAB head coach Larry Giangrosso. "Today, we had some crucial mistakes. Grant (Addison) pitched really well. It was a big game for a freshman. He has been pitching better and better with each outing."
Catcher Brad Willcutt's sacrifice foul fly to right field, allowed third baseman Beau Griffin to score the Golden Eagles' first run of the third inning. Left fielder Carlos Velasquez then singled to right field, scoring first baseman Marc Maddox and second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir. Right fielder Ryan Frith followed with a two-run homer to left field.
UAB got a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when left fielder Jeremy Moran singled through the left side, scoring right fielder Cole Helms.
Southern Miss (33-12, 14-7 C-USA) added a run in the top of the eighth inning when Hoffpauir reached first base on a fielder's choice, allowing shortstop Matt Shepherd to score from third. USM led 6-1.
UAB's final run came in the bottom of the ninth inning when center fielder Sam Clark doubled to left center field, scoring Moran.
The Golden Eagles took two games out of the three-game set with UAB as the teams split a doubleheader Saturday.
UAB next plays at cross-town foe Birmingham-Southern Tuesday at 7 p.m.
