Blazers Fall To USF, 23-5

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of South Florida posted back-to-back eight-run innings en route to a 23-5 victory over UAB in Conference USA baseball action Friday evening at Young Memorial Field.
USF (30-20, 11-13 C-USA) scored eight runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to take a commanding lead over the Blazers and never looked back.
Blazer starter Jeff Brown (4-5) took the loss for UAB (24-25, 10-14 C-USA) after pitching four innings and giving up 15 runs, 14 of which were earned, on 11 hits. He walked five and struck out four.
USF starter Casey Hudspeth (8-3) picked up the win for the Bulls after working seven innings and allowing three runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out 10.
Catcher Devin Ivany went 3-for-6 with a grand slam home run, a double and four runs scored, and designated hitter Matt McHargue was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and three runs scored to lead USF.
Catcher Ben McCullars and designated hitter Nathan McCorkle both went 1-for-2 with a two-run homer to lead UAB.
Second baseman Seth Rollin also homered for the Blazers.
The teams will play game two of the three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m. The final game will be Sunday at 1 p.m.
