Men's Golf Team Earns NCAA East Regional Bid

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's golf team received a bid to the NCAA East Regional tournament, announced the NCAA committee on Monday afternoon. The Blazers, who are making their first regional appearance since 2002, earned the East Region's No. 15 seed, and will play on May 20-22 for the right to compete at the 2004 NCAA men's golf championship.
"This is a great honor and I feel our guys have certainly earned this recognition," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "We have had a pretty good year and hopefully we will be able to play well and continue our season at the NCAA Championship."
The Blazers will be competing in one of the three, 27-team fields over the weekend. The 15th-seeded Blazers and will be playing on the Yale University Golf Course in New Haven, Conn. Joining UAB from in the East Region are the top-five programs in the East: Florida, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech and South Carolina.
The last time the Blazers earned a regional qualifying bid was in 2002. That year, UAB finished tied for ninth at the NCAA East Regional which was held in Roswell, Ga., and advanced to the NCAA Championship in Columbus, Ohio where the Blazers placed 27th out of the top 30 teams in the nation.
In addition, UAB is one of only two Conference USA school which earned an NCAA bid (TCU).
UAB will enter the NCAA Regional having not played in almost a month. The Blazers last competed on April 21 in the final round of the Conference USA Tournament where they placed fourth overall. In fact, UAB earned six top-five finishes out of 12 tournaments played throughout the fall and spring season.
