Blazers Shut Out By Houston 8-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - First baseman Cole Bruce went 2-for-3 with a three run homer and two runs scored in helping lead Houston to an 8-0 win over UAB in Conference USA baseball action Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
Houston (11-18, 4-4 C-USA) struck first in the top of the first inning when right fielder Rob Johnson singled to left center field, scoring Bruce.
The Cougars posted five runs in the top of the second inning. Shortstop Patrick Gaylord reached first on a fielding error by Blazer second baseman Josh Miljavac, allowing catcher Brett Logan to score Houston's first run of the inning. Designated hitter Kevin Roberts later singled through the right side, scoring Gaylord. Bruce followed with a three-run homer to left center field. The Cougars led 6-0.
Houston added a run in the top of the sixth inning on Johnson's sacrifice fly to right field that scored Stewart.
The Cougars took an 8-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning when Gaylord singled through the right side, scoring second baseman Stuart Musslewhite.
Blazer starter Jacob Legg (2-2) took the loss for UAB (14-12, 2-5 C-USA) after pitching one and two-thirds innings and allowing six runs, five of which were earned, on eight hits. He struck out one and did not issue a walk.
Cougar starter Brad Lincoln (3-1) picked up the win for Houston after tossing a complete-game, five-hit shutout. Lincoln walked two and struck out four.
The teams will conclude the three-game set Sunday at noon. The game will be broadcast live via the world wide web on the Blazers' official athletics website, www.uabsports.com.
