BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB posted four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim a 4-0 shutout of Toledo in baseball action Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field. With the win, UAB (10-2) completed a three-game sweep of the Rockets.
Shortstop Seth Rollin doubled to right center field, allowing first baseman Daniel Hill to score the Blazers' first run of the sixth. Catcher Rush Knight followed with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored left fielder Matt Womble. Third baseman Zac Ward then singled through the right side, scoring Rollin. Center fielder Levi Patmon followed with a double to right center field, bringing in Ward.
Jeff Brown (1-1) picked up the win for UAB after tossing a complete-game, five-hit shutout. Brown walked one and struck out two.
"We are real pleased with the sweep," said UAB head coach Larry Giangrosso. "That puts us at 10 wins. I thought we played really solid today. Jeff (Brown) pitched really well. It was a very difficult day to play baseball. The wind was a big factor. It was blowing in very hard. I give our hitters a lot of credit because they had to stay on top of everything."
Rocket starter Derek Overcashier (0-1) took the loss for Toledo (0-6) after working five and two-thirds innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out one.
UAB returns home to Young Memorial Tuesday to host cross-town foe Samford at 6 p.m.
