BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Shortstop Chris Cates singled to right field, allowing first baseman Greg Taylor to score the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning and lift Louisville to a 3-2 win over UAB in Conference USA baseball action at Young Memorial. With the win, Louisville (11-8, 2-1 C-USA) took two games out of the three-game set with the Blazers.
Adam Price (2-2) took the loss for UAB (13-7, 1-2 C-USA) after coming on in relief of Blazer starter Jeff Brown in the top of the sixth inning. Price pitched two and two-thirds innings and allowed one run, which was unearned, on two hits and walked one. Brown worked five and one-third innings and allowed two runs on six hits, walked six and struck out a UAB career-high seven batters.
"I thought the wind blowing in as hard as it did really affected play," said UAB head coach Larry Giangrosso. "We probably hit some balls that would have been out today, that were just hammered, and they were just outs. All day long, we hammered the ball. Their first baseman (Greg Taylor) made a couple of big plays for them (Louisville). It was one of those days. We were right on the verge, but seemed to never get it done. Today, we were close, but just couldn't get the big hit or the big play when we needed it."
Cardinal reliever Brian Halford (3-0) picked up his second win of the series after working two and one-third shut-out innings and giving up one hit. Halford walked one batter. Louisville starter B.J. Rosenberg pitched six and one-third innings and gave up two runs on six hits, walked four and struck out two.
Louisville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when right fielder Mark Jurich singled up the middle, scoring second baseman Nick Haley.
UAB tied the score in the bottom of the fifth inning when first baseman Daniel Hill singled to left field, scoring center fielder Sam Clark.
Louisville regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning when Haley reached first base on a fielding error by Blazer left fielder Matt Womble, allowing Taylor to score from third base.
The Blazers once again tied the score in the bottom of the seventh inning when second baseman Josh Miljavac doubled to right center field, allowing Clark to score his second run of the game.
Louisville won the Saturday contest 7-5 in 10 innings and the Blazers prevailed 16-4 Friday.
UAB returns home to Young Memorial Field Tuesday to take on seventh-ranked Auburn (17-5, 1-2 Southeastern Conference) at 7 p.m.
