BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Center fielder Mike Coles, second baseman Eric Osborn and first baseman Eric Wolfe each went 2-for-4 with an RBI in helping lead Purdue to a 4-2 victory over No. 32 UAB in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field. The Boilermakers have now won two games of the three-game set.
UAB (10-5) threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning with runners on second and third and one out, but Boilermaker reliever Trae Dauby struck out the final two UAB batters to pick up his second save of the series.
Purdue (3-5) got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Wolfe singled to left center field, allowing designated hitter John Hunter to score Purdue's first run of the inning. Left fielder Joe Hartman then reached on a fielding error by Blazer second baseman Josh Miljavac, allowing Wolfe to score.
The Boilermakers added a run in the top of the fourth inning when Coles singled to right center field, scoring Hartman.
UAB got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when right fielder Cole Helms doubled to right field, scoring center fielder Sam Clark.
The Blazers added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when shortstop Dan Stucky singled through the left side, scoring Nathan McCorkle, who had pinch hit for Blazer starting pitcher Jacob Legg.
Purdue got a run in the top of the ninth inning when Osborn singled up the middle, scoring Coles.
Legg (2-1) took the loss for UAB after working five and two-thirds innings and allowing three runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits. He walked three and struck out four.
"They (Purdue) came up with some big pitches," said UAB head coach Larry Giangrosso. "They did that all game long. We had a couple of opportunities to score some runs and their pitchers made some really good pitches. I thought Jacob (Legg) pitched well enough to have a chance to win. We just didn't get him any run support. Today, it just seemed like we were out of synch."
Boilermaker starter Dan Sattler (1-1) picked up the win for Purdue after pitching five innings and allowing one run on four hits. He struck out three batters without issuing a walk.
UAB left eight runners on base and Purdue stranded 10 men.
