BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team improved its record to 3-0 on the season here Friday with a convincing 6-1 victory over visiting Furman.
"I thought the guys gave a strong effort today against a dangerous Furman team," said Blazer head coach Derek Tarr. "The way we came out and won the doubles point was a big boost for us. This was definitely a better effort for us today than our last match (a win over Birmingham-Southern).
"We handled the (weather) conditions quite well," Tarr said, "and really, the conditions deteriorated as the match went along."
The Blazers took two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading to singles and then put together straight-set wins at three singles positions to post their third consecutive win. Senior Sanzaruz Zaman provided the clinching win for UAB with his 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over the Paladins' Greg Maarschalk.
Tobi Klein and Andre Maier won at No. 1 doubles for UAB, defeating Furman's John Chesworth and Brian Crook, 8-4. The Blazers also claimed a win at No. 3 doubles as Dino Mancarella and Ruben Zrihen beat the Paladins' Kevin Lackey and Scott Kahler, 8-5.
Aside from Zaman's clinching singles win at No. 5, UAB's other victories in singles came at No. 1 from Klein who downed Furman's Chesworth by a 7-6, 6-0 score. At No. 2, UAB's Anton Mavrin won over the Paladins' Patrick Fillnow, 7-6, 7-6 while Zrihen defeated Furman's Ben Pauluhn at No. 4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Mancarella provided tbe Blazers with their final singles point as he defeated B.J. James by a score of 6-3, 3-6, (10-4). UAB's only defeat on the day came at No. 3 singles where Furman's Allen Simmons downed the Blazers' Maier, 6-2, 6-2.
The match against Furman Friday was the first of four in six days for the Blazers. UAB will be back in action Saturday as it plays host to Alabama A&M before meeting North Alabama at home on Tuesday. Next Thursday, the Blazers take on nationally-ranked Mississippi State in Starkville.
