HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The UAB volleyball team wrapped up the 2004 season with a 3-0 loss to Southern Miss on Saturday evening at Payne Center in Hattiesburg. The Blazers finish the season 1-24 overall and 0-13 in C-USA play while the Golden Eagles improve to 7-20 and 2-11. UAB Freshman Nicole Bowland led the way for the Blazers with 12 kills. Amanda Blunck, Jazzmien Stephens and Morgan Johnson combined for 42 of Southern Miss' 59 kills on the night. Setter Amy Truong led all players with 42 assists.
"I thought we got some good play from certain players again tonight," said head coach Melinda Claiborne. "Nicole Bowland continues to be our top player as a freshman and Shaniquwa Cooper played well. We're very young but gained a lot of valuable experience this season. We're definitely building towards the future."
The Golden Eagles opened the match with authority, dominating the first game 30-10. UAB came back strong in game two, but Southern Miss held on for a 30-28 win. The third game was just as close, but the Golden Eagles were able to escape with a 31-29 win.
The 2004 Conference USA Volleyball Tournament will be held Nov. 19-22 in Louisville, Ky.
