Volleyball Finishes C-USA Season at Tulane and Southern Miss

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team wraps up its conference schedule this weekend when the Blazers take on Tulane and Southern Miss on the road. UAB heads to New Orleans for a Friday matchup with the Green Wave at 7 p.m. before its final C-USA showdown of the season against Southern Miss Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in Hattiesburg.
UAB (1-22, 0-11 C-USA) is coming off a pair of losses last weekend to Memphis and Saint Louis. Memphis handled UAB, 3-0 Friday in Bartow Arena and Saint Louis took care of the Blazers, 3-1 Saturday evening. UAB was able to grab an early advantage by taking game one from the Billikens, marking the team's first lead in a match since Oct. 5 against Mercer.
The Blazers were led by junior Isabel Oquendo who recorded a double-double in each match, totaling 23 kills and 20 digs to go along with four service aces which all came Saturday against the Billikens. Freshman Nicole Bowland also continued her breakout season, notching a career-best 18 kills to go along with a .300 hitting percentage against Saint Louis. Redshirt sophomore Kaitlyn Filar's 24 assists against the Billikens were also a career-high for the transfer from Georgia.
Tulane (14-9, 4-7 C-USA) dropped its matches to Marquette and DePaul last weekend but rebounded strong with a 3-0 sweep of Jackson State on Tuesday in New Orleans, snapping a five-match losing skid. Tulane leads the all-time series against UAB, 12-5.
Southern Miss (5-20, 0-11 C-USA) also fell to DePaul and Marquette on the road last weekend. The Golden Eagles carry a 14-11 all-time advantage against the Blazers into Saturday's match.
This weekend's matches will be the final of the season for the Blazers. The previously scheduled UCF Thanksgiving Classic scheduled for Nov. 26-27 in Orlando has been cancelled.
