BATON ROUGE, La. - Junior Clark Brown scorched the University Club Course Tuesday, carding a three-under-par 69 to pace UAB golfers in the third and final round of the University Club Intercollegiate. Brown's three rounds of 77-70-69 put the Navarre, Fla., product in a tie for 36th individually and helped UAB to a tie with Mississippi State for 12th in the team standings.
Brown's third round 69 matched teammate Garret Osborn's low round for the tournament as UAB golfers carded seven rounds of par or under in the two-day event. Ryan Thomas (72-72-74), Chris Cousins (73-70-75) and Osborn (74-69-75) all finished with a three-round total of 218 and tied for 43rd place overall. Will Wilcox's 73-75-72 tallied 220 and was tied for 58th individually.
"Our scores were fairly solid," said UAB men's golf coach Alan Kaufman. "We played tough tournaments this fall against top-rated teams across the board. While our final standing of 12th might seem high to some, our level of competition has been elevated by our schedule. We gave it a good shot this fall. I can't wait to see how much better we are come spring."
UAB's three round scores of 292-281-290 put the Blazers at 863 for the 54-hole event and tied them with the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. The Blazers were nine shots behind 11th place Baylor and 11 strokes behind Conference USA rival Tulane in the team standings. Southern Methodist won the event with a 39-under team score of 825. Ole Miss, Georgia Southern, Alabama and host LSU rounded out the top five.
The event was the final one for the fall season for Alan Kaufman's club. The Blazers take the winter months off before returning to the links for the Florida Gator Invitational, Feb. 3-6, in Gainesville, Fla.
