FORT WORTH, Texas - The UAB women's soccer team recorded its fifth shutout of the season and fourth in Conference USA play as the Blazers blanked TCU, 2-0, on Friday at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.
The Blazers (10-5-1, 6-2-0 C-USA) won their second-straight game and all but solidified a spot in the Conference USA tournament, which will take place Nov. 3-6 in St. Louis, Mo. UAB improved to 4-0 all-time against the Horned Frogs, who fell to 5-11-0 overall and 3-5-0 in conference play. The game started roughly 45 minutes late due to a campus-wide weather alert at TCU.
UAB broke a 0-0 halftime tie by scoring just 24 seconds into the second period as Tara Kidwell sent a pass from the end line to fellow senior Jenny Rynders for her sixth goal of the season. The Blazers iced the game with a late goal, as sophomore Laura Richards notched her fourth goal of the season in the 88th minute off the assist from freshman Sally Palmer. UAB won for the ninth time in its last 13 games.
The Blazers out-shot TCU, 26-14, and took nine shots on goal to the Frogs' five. UAB sophomore goalkeeper Katie Forbis played all 90 minutes in the match and recorded five saves.
"We played well on defense tonight and were very organized and consistent," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "We had some missed opportunities early in the game but played well the whole time."
"We stretched them out a little bit in the second half but they really pushed us," said Harbin. "The last five minutes TCU really pushed hard and that is how they always play," said Harbin.
"I am proud of our girls for keeping it together at the end, and it was just a good, solid game under adverse conditions," said Harbin. "This was one of our more solid 90 minute games this season."
The Blazers will face Houston on Sunday in Houston, Texas. The match will begin at noon.
