UAB Women's Basketball Falls To Austin Peay, 70-67

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ----- The UAB women's basketball team (6-7) had a chance to tie the game with 1.7 seconds left on the clock, but were unable to hit the three-pointer, as the Lady Blazers fell to Austin Peay (6-5), 70-67, here Saturday night.
Senior Natasha Thomas had 17 points in the second half, but the Lady Blazers come back came up short. The loss snaps UAB's four-game win streak.
The Lady Blazers were down by seven, 63-56, with 1:56 left in the game, when Thomas took charge of the UAB offense, scoring nine points in the final two minutes of play. Her free throw with five seconds left brought UAB within three, 70-67. After an Austin Peay turnover, the Lady Blazers got the ball back on their own sideline with 1.7 seconds left on the clock. Vanessa White passed the ball into Thomas, whose shot bounced off the side of the rim.
After being down, 29-23, at the half, UAB came out firing in the second half, hitting 58.6 percent of its shots from the floor in the final 20 minutes. The Lady Blazers hit a total of 47.3 percent of their attempts in the game and were 4-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Austin Peay was led by Kera Bergeron's 18 points, as she hit 6-of-9 attempts from three-point land. Ashley Haynes added 16 points to the cause and had eight defensive rebounds. The Lady Govs shot 49.1 percent from the floor.
Next, UAB heads to North Carolina for the start of its Conference USA schedule. The Lady Blazers battle East Carolina on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. and then face Charlotte on Jan. 11 at 2 p.m.
