UAB Women's Basketball Begins New Year On The Road

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's basketball team begins 2004 on the road, heading to Clarksville, Tenn., to take on Austin Peay on Saturday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m. The Lady Blazers are looking for their fifth-straight win, something they have not done since the 2000-01 season.
The Lady Blazers are coming off a 78-58 win over Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday, their fourth-consecutive victory. UAB did not allow the Skyhawks a field goal for the first 9 ? minutes of the second half and outscored UT-Martin, 53-24, in the final 20 minutes for the win. The Lady Blazers were led by tournament MVP Natasha Thomas' 18 points.
Austin Peay is 5-5 overall and is coming off an 82-56 loss at Kentucky on Tuesday. The Lady Govs have three players averaging double-digits, with Gerlonda Hardin leading the way with 15.1 ppg. Ashley Haynes is APSU's leading rebounder with 8.5 rpg. The Lady Govs are shooting 40.9 percent from the floor and average 61.7 points per contest.
UAB will be playing Austin Peay for the ninth time in school history with the Lady Blazers holding a 7-1 advantage. APSU defeated UAB for the first time on Jan. 26, 2003 in Bartow Arena, 76-64. UAB and Austin Peay first met on Dec. 9, 1988, as the Lady Blazers won 79-59 at home.
