GULF SHORES, Ala. ----- UAB freshman golfer Clark Brown captured the Alabama State Amateur Championship, defeating Scott Weaver of Madison in a three-hole playoff here Sunday at the Cotton Creek Course at Craft Farms Golf Resort. Brown had rounds of 72-69-70-69 to finish with an eight-under 280.
"All day I kept focusing on shooting a good number," Brown said. "It feels great and so awesome to win. This gives me a lot of confidence."
Brown began the 72nd and final hole a stroke behind Weaver; however, he sank a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole to force the playoff. In the playoff, which is a three-hole combined score, Brown birdied the 16th and 17th and parred the 18th, while Weaver parred all three of the playoff holes.
"Clark has improved throughout the year, so it doesn't surprise me he played this well in the state amateur championship," UAB men's golf head coach Alan Kaufman said. "He has made tremendous strides all season long and it finally came all together for him. We are looking forward to having him for the next three years at UAB and we think he has a really good chance to become a great player."
Brown was one of only three UAB golfers - and the only freshman - to play in all 11 tournaments during the 2002-03 campaign. His average of 75.68 strokes per round was fifth-best on the team.
As the season progressed, Brown seemed to gain momentum with four of his top five performances coming in the final four tournaments of the season. His best finish of the season came at the Conference USA Championship where he finished in a tie for 21st with a 221.
