Mitch Jones Drafted By The Tampa Bay Devil Rays

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Former UAB outfielder Mitch Jones was drafted Wednesday by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as the first pick in the 25th round of the 2003 Major League Baseball draft. Jones was the 728th selection overall.
The Birmingham native completed a standout career for the Blazers in 2003, finishing the season with team's highest batting average (.392). Jones also led the team in hits (76) last season.
A four-year letterwinner for UAB (2000-03), Jones finished his career ranked third on UAB's all-time career list in stolen bases and ninth in Conference USA history with 72. In addition, he ranks fifth in UAB history in hits with 217, sixth in total bases with 328, and seventh in both home runs ( 23) and runs scored (136).
Jones was named a Freshman All-American by Baseball America in 2000 and was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team and Second-Team All-C-USA in 2000.
Jones graduated from UAB May 10 with a degree in communications management.
