Blazers Finish Competition At Atlanta Intercollegiate

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. ----- The UAB men's golf team, playing in its final tournament of the 2003 season, finished in eighth overall at the fourth annual Atlanta Intercollegiate here Friday. The Blazers shot a three-round total of 880 (289-295-296) in the tournament which featured eight NCAA Regional-bound teams and seven teams ranked in the top 30.
The Blazers were led by freshman Tigh Van Leeuwen (73-77-70) - who fired the team's low round of the day with a 70 - and junior Bobby Spiller (76-73-71) with each shooting a 220 to finish in a tie for 28th. Freshman Nathan Turner ended his consecutive rounds of 74 or below at 11, by carding an 82 in the tournament's final day to finish in a tie for 36th with a 222 (70-70-82). Freshman Clark Brown finished in 48th with a 225 (73-75-77), while sophomore Chris Cousins rounded out the Blazers by firing a 228 (73-77-78) to finish in a tie for 50th.
Shooting a tournament-record team score of 828, No. 9 Florida captured the Atlanta Intercollegiate title. Florida was led by junior Camilo Villegas who shot a tournament record, 22-under 194, edging the previous top individual score of 197 held by former Blazer Graeme McDowell set in 2001.
In a distant second behind the Gators was No. 1 Clemson, which shot an 848 (288-279-281). The College of Charleston, ranked No. 22 in the nation, finished third with 849, five strokes ahead of tournament host Georgia State (854).Augusta State, ranked fourth in the country, rounded out the top five with 855, while 12th-ranked Georgia (864) finished in sixth and 11th-ranked Auburn (870) finished seventh.
This tournament concludes the men's golf 2002-03 campaign.
