ATLANTA, Ga. ----- UAB freshman Nathan Turner fired back-to-back rounds of 70 to finish with a 140, and sits in a tie for ninth at the fourth annual Atlanta Intercollegiate here Thursday. The Blazers, coming off a runner-up finish at the Conference USA championship, shot a score of 584 to place ninth overall on the par 73, 6,899-yard Eagle?s Landing country club.
Turner, who was named to the Conference USA all-freshman team last week, fired his 10th and 11th consecutive rounds of 74 or below after Thursday's opening two rounds. He currently sits eight strokes behind tournament leader Camilo Villegas (132) of Florida
Other Blazers include fellow freshman Clark Brown who sits in a tie for 37th overall after shooting a 148 (73-75). Bobby Spiller is just behind Brown with a 149 (76-73) and is tied for 42nd, while Tigh Van Leeuwen (73-77) and Chris Cousins (73-77) are tied for 45th, each shooting a 150.
SEC Champion Florida, ranked fifth overall in the country, sits atop the leaderboard with 557. Tournament hosts Georgia State is just one stroke behind the Gators with a 558. In third place is No. 4 Augusta State is tied with No. 22 College of Charleston (565), while No. 1-ranked Clemson rounds out the top five teams with 567.
The tournament got under way Thursday morning, following a night of high winds and heavy rains. The weather had no effect, however, on the competing golfers, who finished their first round of play with impressive individual and team scores in a tournament that features eight NCAA Regional-bound teams.
Tournament play will conclude on Friday, May 9.
