Baseball Team's Game With East Carolina Suspended

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The UAB baseball team's game against Conference USA rival East Carolina at Harrington Field was suspended due to inclement weather in the area. The game will resume in the top of the sixth inning Sunday at noon (ET). The Blazers are leading the game 10-4 and are at bat with a runner on first base and one out.
UAB got on top 2-0 in the top of the third inning. Center fielder Sam Clark led off the inning with a solo home run to right center field. Later in the inning, after stealing third base, left fielder Mitch Jones was able to score on catcher Kevin O'Sullivan's errant throw on the steal attempt.
East Carolina answered with a run in the bottom of the third when left fielder Jamie Paige singled to center field, bringing in third baseman Mark Minicozzi.
UAB took a 6-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Catcher Eugene Rodriguez grounded out to the shortstop, allowing third baseman Drew Connell to score the Blazers' first run of the inning. Shortstop Josh Miljavac followed with a single that scored designated hitter Matt Womble. Second baseman Drew Goneke later singled up the middle, scoring Miljavac. Jones scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch by Pirate starter Will Brinson.
The Blazers got out to an 8-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run homer to left center field by Rodriguez.
East Carolina answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Paige singled to right field, bringing in O'Sullivan for the Pirates first run of the inning. Center fielder Ryan Jones followed with a single to right field that scored right fielder Ben Sanderson. Paige scored the Pirates' final run of the inning on a wild pitch by Blazer starter Scott Gibson. UAB led 8-4.
UAB increased its advantage to six in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run homer to left field by right fielder Kyle Leon.
Gibson pitched all five innings for the Blazers and gave up four runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits. He recorded two strikeouts and did not issue a walk.
Brinson worked three and two-thirds innings for East Carolina and allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on six hits. He walked four and struck out six.
UAB and East Carolina will play the third and final game of the series Sunday immediately following the completion of Saturday's suspended game.
UAB lost Friday's contest against ECU 11-8.
