Baseball Team Falls To Houston 2-1

HOUSTON, Texas - Designated hitter Cole Bruce's double down the left field line broke up a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning and lifted Houston (16-15, 8-3 Conference USA) to a 2-1 victory over UAB (21-9, 6-4 C-USA) in Conference USA baseball action Saturday evening at Cougar Field.
Cole's double allowed first baseman Thomas Papavasiliou to score the gamewinner.
Houston struck first in the bottom of the third inning on third baseman Hyung Cho's single through the middle that scored left fielder Gabe Lucas.
UAB answered with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Second baseman Seth Rollin reached on a throwing error by Cho, allowing center fielder Sam Clark to score from third base.
Cougar starter Danny Zell (7-2) picked up the win for Houston after working seven innings and allowing one run, which was unearned, surrendering one walk and recording five strikeouts. Ryan Wagner came on in relief of Zell in the eighth inning and struck out all six UAB batters he faced to pick up his seventh save of the season.
Blazer starter Jon Burgett (4-1) took the loss for UAB after pitching five and one-third innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Cody Cillo came on in relief of Burgett and worked two and two-thirds innings. He gave up one walk and recorded two strikeouts.
UAB and Houston will meet in the final game of the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
