BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Designated hitter Matt Womble and second baseman Seth Rollin had a home run apiece to help lead UAB (14-1) to a 5-0 shutout of Louisiana-Monroe (7-6) in baseball action Friday evening at Young Memorial Field.
UAB took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when third baseman Steve Martin scored on a balk by Indian pitcher Justin Lensch.
The Blazers added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With runners on second and third base, Rollin grounded out to second base, scoring first baseman Daniel Hill. Catcher Eugene Rodriguez then doubled to right center field to bring in Womble.
UAB went up 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning on back to back home runs by Womble and Rollin respectively.
Blazer starter Lucas Trotter (3-0) picked up the win after throwing seven shut-out innings and allowing only two hits. He walked two and struck out four. Ryan Huffman and Kevin Brannon each had one inning of work for the Blazers.
Lensch (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Louisiana-Monroe after working six innings and allowing five runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out six. Jim Miller pitched the final two innings for ULM and gave up one hit and had one strikeout.
"We got a solid performance from Lucas (Trotter) tonight," said UAB head coach Larry Giangrosso. "I thought we got a solid performance from all three of our pitchers. I think we did a good job of getting their starter's (Justin Lensch) pitch count up. He did a good job early and he had us off balance, but once we got the pitch count up, we were able to do some things.
"We have been needing some power in the five and six hole and it was good to see Matt (Womble) and Seth (Rollin) hit the ball well tonight."
UAB will take on Louisiana-Monroe Saturday at 3 p.m. at Young Memorial Field in game two of the series.
