HOUSTON, Texas - The UAB women's basketball team saw its 2002-03 season come to an end here Sunday as the Lady Blazers fell to Houston, 84-47.
The loss, the most lopsided of the season for UAB (8-19, 4-10 Conference USA), was the Lady Blazers' eighth in a row after a 4-2 start in league play. The defeat also means that UAB will not be a participant in this coming week's C-USA Tournament at Memphis. The Lady Blazers tied East Carolina record-wise at 4-10 in conference play, but the Lady Pirates gained the final berth for the C-USA tournament by virtue of its win last weekend over UAB in Birmingham.
On Sunday, the Lady Blazers were victims to another outstanding performance by Houston All-American Chandi Jones, who posted 31 points and 10 rebounds at Hofheinz Pavilion. The win, the Lady Cougars' third consecutive, is its longest streak since January 4. Houston is now 15-12 overall and 6-8 in conference play.
Jones, the nation's leading scorer for the 2002-03 season, (27.5 ppg) posted her 12th double-double of the season and added four assists in the win. She is only 20 points away from becoming Houston's all-time leading female scorer (1,957 points).
UAB trailed 35-22 at halftime but was outscored by a 49-25 margin after intermission. The Lady Blazers committed 27 turnovers on the afternoon, helping the Lady Cougars to a 31-8 advantage on points off turnovers.
UAB shot only 35.7 percent from the field in the game, hitting but 3-of-16 from three-point range.
Natasha Thomas led UAB with 12 points and Michelle Smith added 11 points and nine rebounds. The game was Smith's final one as a Lady Blazer.
Ten of Houston's 11 players put points on the board for the Lady Cougars.
