ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. --- Freshman Tigh VanLeeuwen finished the day with a 74 and sits in second overall to lead the Blazers in day one of the Palencia Invitational here Sunday. The Blazers shot a 310 on the day and currently sits in sixth place overall out of the 11-team field; however, are only one stroke away from third place.
UAB began the second round of play after a two-hour rain delay, but play was suspended due to darkness and will be continued on Monday morning.
"Tigh had a great round of golf," UAB head golf coach Alan Kaufman said. "Hopefully we can learn from the mistakes we made today and finish strong on Monday."
VanLeeuwen shot a 39-35 and is two over par on the par 72, 6,999-yard course. Sophomore Ryan Thomas followed VanLeeuwen's lead and sits in a tie for 16th overall, after firing a five-over 77. Chris Cousins finished with a seven-over 79 (40-39) to place in a tie for 28th overall, while Robert Svensson (36-44) and Clark Brown (38-42) completed the first round in a tie for 34th with an eight-over 80.
Auburn shot a 301 to lead the field, while Georgia State sits one stroke back at 302. Coastal Carolina, Ole Miss and Arkansas each shot a 309 to round out the top five.
UAB will complete tournament play when it will finish round two and round three on Monday, March 3.
