Men's Golf Finishes Ninth At Gator Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ----- The UAB men's golf team improved two spots from Saturday's opening day to finish ninth overall, shooting a 896 (305-288-303) in the 15-team Gator Invitational here Sunday. The Blazers defeated six other teams, including last year's Gator Invitational champion LSU.
Augusta State (869) defeated tournament hosts Florida (872) by three strokes to capture the tournament title. Purdue finished third, 10 strokes back of the Gators with an 882 (+42). College of Charleston finished in fourth at +45 (885), while Vanderbilt and Georgia Southern finished in a tie for fifth at +50 (890).
Freshman Robert Svensson (78-68-77) and sophomore Ryan Thomas (74-76-73) led the Blazers, shooting a 13-over 223 to finish in a tie for 22nd. Freshman Tigh VanLeeuwen finished in a tie for 43rd ( 76-76-75) in his debut with the UAB golf team. Chris Cousins shot a 229 (81-70-78) to place 49th, while Clark Brown rounded out the team with a 230 (77-74-79) to place in a tie for 55th.
The men's golf team will next be in action on March 1-3 when they compete at the Palencia Collegiate Invitational in Saint Augustine, Fla.
