BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's basketball team (8-14, 4-5) went 2-of-12 from three-point range and committed 19 turnovers as it was defeated by the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (12-10, 5-4) here Friday, 68-51.
"We played badly as a team tonight," said UAB head coach Jeannie Milling. "Our perimeter players did not contribute and our bench players did not provide many points. On the positive side, I thought that our pressure-trap defense did some positive things for us, as did our two-two full court press. We had 19 turnovers and did not get productivity from the 11 turnovers that we created. This was a big game for us to lose and now we have to plan and prepare to play Tulane."
Natasha Thomas and Michelle Smith accounted for 33 of UAB's 51 points and 25 of the Lady Blazers 36 rebounds. Twelve UAB players saw action tonight, but only seven of them scored, while nine Golden Eagles recorded points. Southern Miss tallied 12 steals in the game and forced UAB into 7-of-24 shooting from the floor in the second half. The Lady Blazers also struggled at the free-throw line, hitting 11-of-24 attempts on the night.
Despite the loss, Thomas and Smith both tallied double-doubles in the game. Thomas had 19 points and 14 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. Smith had 14 points and 11 boards in her 36 minutes of play for her ninth of the season.
La'Tasha Summerall recorded a game-high 20 points, while Allison Story contributed 16 points for the Golden Eagles.
The Lady Blazers face Tulane on Sunday, February 16, at 2 p.m.
