Blazers Fall To Marquette 3-1

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Marquette (10-15, 7-5 Conference USA) extended its winning streak to five matches and ended UAB's three-match winning streak, defeating the Blazers 30-19, 25-30, 30-25, 30-24 in Conference USA volleyball action Saturday evening at Marquette Gym.
Senior outside hitter Martina Shields recorded her 13th double-double of the season with a match-leading 20 kills to go along with 10 digs, while hitting for .292 and totaling four blocks to lead UAB (14-15, 6-5 C-USA). Senior middle blocker Karen Boyd posted her eighth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs to go along with seven total blocks and a .321 hitting percentage for the Blazers. Freshman setter Bilun Gunal added 41 assists for the UAB.
"I thought it was a well-fought match with two good teams," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "We had some inconsistent performances tonight, but overall we continue to play well."
Sophomore outside hitter Theresa Coughlin had 17 kills, 10 digs and two total blocks to lead Marquette. Senior setter Gemma Greer added 54 assists, 10 digs and four service aces for the Golden Eagles.
UAB returns home to Bartow Arena this weekend for its final two regular season C-USA matches. Friday, the Blazers take on No. 24 Cincinnati (25-2, 11-0 C-USA), who is currently on a 13-match winning streak, and Saturday, UAB faces No. 23 Louisville (16-4, 9-1 C-USA), who is currently enjoying an eight-match winning streak.
