BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB football team practiced for a little over two hours here Wednesday in pads and shorts, making some final preparations for its crucial matchup with Conference USA rival Houston. The Blazers concentrated on game scenarios and worked out some game situations.
"Practice went good tonight," UAB head coach Watson Brown said. "Saturday will be the last game of the regular season and every one of our games has been important, but it has come down to this weekend."
UAB (5-6, 4-3 C-USA) enters Saturday's contest with an opportunity to become bowl-eligible for the third time in four seasons. Last week, the Blazers used a late field goal from Nick Hayes to defeat the USF Bulls, 22-19, on the road in Tampa, Fla.
Both the Blazers and Cougars (6-5, 3-5 C-USA) are two of three teams vying for the C-USA's fifth bowl position, along with Cincinnati. UAB and Cincinnati can each become bowl-eligible with wins this weekend, while the Cougars have already secured at least a .500 record.
"I talked to the team last Monday about bowl scenarios and we haven't mentioned it since," said Brown. "I truly believe that the winner of the game is the team that is going to get a bowl birth, but from here on it doesn't really matter. We have to get prepared and try to win ourselves a game."
Saturday's kickoff between UAB and Houston is scheduled for 4 p.m. The game is being televised live by Charter/Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) and can also be heard live locally on WYDE-FM 101.1. Matt Coulter and Kevin Drake will be calling the play-by-play on CSS, while Gary Sanders and former UAB quarterback Thomas Cox will be calling the game on radio.
