TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Nick Hayes kicked a 42-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining to lift UAB past South Florida 22-19 Saturday night in Conference USA action.
The victory sustained the bowl hopes of UAB (5-6, 4-3 Conference USA). The loss ended any bowl plans for South Florida (6-4, 4-3), which has two victories against Division I-AA opponents.
Hayes' third field goal of the game came shortly after the Blazers allowed the Bulls to rally from a 19-3 fourth-quarter deficit.
A pair of Vince Brewer scoring runs, from 1 and 5 yards, were each coupled with successful two-point conversions as the Bulls pulled into a 19-19 tie. But the Blazers managed to drive down to the South Florida 25, and Hayes came through with the gamewinner.
Backup quarterback Curtis Falany staked UAB to a 13-3 lead with scoring passes on consecutive offensive snaps in the second quarter.
The freshman capped an 80-yard drive with a 10-yard scoring pass to tight end Cedric Hampton. Falaney began the next UAB possession with a 56-yard strike to wide receiver Roddy White.
Hayes added a 23-yard field goal to give the Blazers a 16-3 halftime lead, then produced the only points in the third quarter with a 49-yard kick.
South Florida lost for only the second time in its last 25 home games.
