BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB football team practiced for a little over two hours here Wednesday in pads and shorts, making some final preparations for its game with Conference USA rival Army. The Blazers concentrated on game scenarios and worked out some game situations.
"We had a real spirited practice today," UAB head coach Watson Brown said. "The guys were having a little bit of fun and I thought it was a good practice."
The Blazers (3-5, 2-2 C-USA) are coming off their second-straight three-point loss to a top-25 team. UAB narrowly lost to No. 4 Georgia, 16-13, at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga., last Saturday. The Blazers played the game with redshirt freshman quarterback Chris Williams, who was making his first-career start. One week earlier, UAB almost knocked off No. 13 TCU, falling, 27-24.
"I hope those games gave us some confidence," continued Brown. "Our guys have been playing good football. We've won two and lost two and those two losses came against top-20 teams. We have been playing well and hopefully that will continue."
The Black Knights (0-8, 0-6 C-USA) will be looking for not only their first win of the season, but also the first win over UAB in the program's history. UAB currently holds a 3-0 advantage in the series' history, including winning by a 29-26 score last year at West Point. Quarterback Darrell Hackney connected with wide receiver Willie Quinnie on a 20-yard touchdown pass with only :08 remaining in the game.
UAB will play its first home game in three weeks this Saturday as the Blazers square off against the Army Black Knights at 3 p.m. at Legion Field.
