BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's soccer team will attempt to win its fourth-consecutive match on Sunday as the Blazers host the Memphis Lady Tigers in their final home contest of the 2003 season at 2 p.m. at West Campus Field.
UAB (11-4, 6-2 Conference USA) extended its winning streak to three straight matches on Friday with a 1-0 victory over first-place TCU. The Blazers have already tied a school-record for most shutouts in a season with eight and have earned shutout victories in their previous three contests.
With Friday's shutout win versus the Horned Frogs, UAB recorded three straight shutouts for the first time since the 1998 season. In 1998, the Blazers reeled off four-consecutive shutout wins against Tulane, 1-0, Southern Miss, 2-0, Marquette, 1-0, and the DePaul Blue Demons, 5-0. UAB finished the 1998 campaign with a school-record C-USA mark of 8-3.
Memphis (5-8-3, 2-5-1 C-USA) heads into Sunday's contest as the 10th-place team in the conference. The Lady Tigers have compiled five standings points in C-USA competition and are currently fighting for a spot in the conference tournament.
After a dismal 0-4-1 start in conference play, Memphis turned things around a bit after recording a weekend sweep against Tulane and Southern Miss a week ago. The Lady Tigers blasted Tulane, 4-0, on Oct. 17, before squeaking past Southern Miss, 3-2, last Sunday. On Friday, Memphis dropped its home finale against USF, 1-0.
UAB owns a significant 6-2 advantage in the all-time series against Memphis. After winning four straight matches in the rivalry, the Blazers had their winning streak snapped last season in a 1-0 loss on the road. UAB has outscored the Lady Tigers, 13-7, in the seven meetings between the two schools.
The UAB women's soccer team will attempt to take one step further to its first C-USA championship on Sunday as the Blazers square off against the Memphis Lady Tigers at 2 p.m. at West Campus Field.
