Women's Basketball Season Starts New Year Against Austin Peay

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB women's basketball team (4-7) will host Austin Peay State University (5-3) on Friday, January 3, at 7 p.m. in Bartow Arena. UAB has never lost to the Lady Govs in the previous seven meetings.
The Lady Blazers are coming off a 70-53 victory over Central Connecticut on December 30 in the third-place game of the 2002 Dartmouth Classic in Hanover, N.H. UAB was led by all-tournament team selection Natasha Thomas, who scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Senior K'Shaki Short had two career-highs in the contest, with 16 points and eight steals. Thomas leads UAB with 16.8 points per contest and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Austin Peay is coming off a 76-60 loss at Ohio State on December 29. Senior Brooke Armistead led all scorers with 20 points and had a team-high six rebounds in the loss. Armistead leads the Lady Govs with 18.5 points per game, while junior Gerlonda Hardin has a team-leading 6.8 rpg. Head coach Susie Gardner is in her seventh season at Austin Peay and has a 90-92 record at the school.
