The UAB women's soccer team showed impressive offense and defense, as it handed the Cowgirls of Wyoming a 3-0 defeat. Goalie, Lisa Nowoslawski had nine saves in the Blazers first victory of the season in the OHANA Hotels & Resorts No Ka Oi, Saturday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
"Lisa Nowoslawski had to work quite a bit to get that shutout," said head coach Paul Harbin. "She made one spectacular save midway through the game that on most nights, against most goalkeepers is going to be in the back of the net. That's something that she's been working on for the last two weeks and it's nice to see that it paid off."
The Blazers got things going in the opening minutes of the game. At the 1:10 mark, Tara Kidwell scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Jill Knottek. In the second half, UAB came out aggressively, with Jenny Rynders scoring her second goal of the season in the 49th minute. The third and final goal of the game came nine minutes later on an unassisted shot from Jill Knottek. The Blazers were able to play 19 different players, allowing Coach Harbin to get valuable experience for many of his younger players.
"Fortunately, we were able to get experience for several players. That helps to give us more options in the future," Harbin said. "I'm pleased with the progress and I'm definitely pleased with the result. We're excited to get our first win of the season, hopefully it will get us off on a roll."
Senior Adrienne Suffridge led the team with four shots, while Knottek and Kidwell each finished the game with a goal and an assist to their credit.
UAB has its first home game of the season this Thursday, September 5th, at 7 pm against Vanderbilt at West Campus Field (9th Avenue South & 11th Street South).
