Birmingham-Southern seniors Tim Hicks and Jon Prince put together career-best nights in helping the Panthers defeat UAB 8-5 Tuesday evening at Scrushy-Striplin Field on the BSC campus.
It was the first meeting between the Panthers (32-19) and Blazers (14-34) since the 1991 season.
Hicks (5-2), who was making just his second start of the season, allowed just one Blazer run on four hits while striking out five in six and 1/3 innings. Prince had a career-high four hits in four at-bats and drove in a pair on a two-run single in the seventh.
Panther shortstop Pat Mizerany also had a career night, driving in three runs on a pair of hits, including a two-out, two-run double that gave the Panthers a 5-1 lead in the sixth.
UAB reliever Ross Dobbins (3-4), the second of five Blazer pitchers, took the loss, giving up two runs on four hits in two innings of work.
After the Blazers had cut the Panther lead to three with two runs in the ninth, BSC closer Tyler Sullivan recorded the final out for his seventh save.
The Blazers got on the board first on a Eric Lyon solo home run to right field in the first inning. The lead would be short-lived as the Panthers tied it up in the bottom half when Adam Pease reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, moved to third on a fly ball and scored on a passed ball.
Birmingham-Southern took a 2-1 lead in the third when Matt Bogue led off with a double down the right field line and later scored on an RBI single by Connor Robertson. The Panthers tacked on another in the fourth on Mizerany's run-scoring single.
Blazer designated hitter Joe Yarbrough hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot, in the seventh to cut the Panther lead to 5-2.
The Panthers pushed their lead to 8-2 in the seventh, scoring three times with two outs. Scott Asher's single scored Adam Tucker, and Prince then delivered his two-run single that scored Cory Hamrick and Asher.
Lyon, Yarbrough and Mitch Jones each had two hits for UAB.
The two teams will meet again Wednesday at UAB's Young Memorial Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm CDT.
