Baseball Shut Out By TCU In Game One

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU starting pitcher Patrick Newburn worked a complete-game shutout, allowing only six hits, and shortstop Levi Robinson hit a two-run homer as the Horned Frogs defeated UAB 8-0 in game one of a three-game Conference USA series Friday afternoon at TCU Diamond.
Newburn (3-2), a junior right-hander, threw 123 pitches in nine innings - 80 for strikes. He struck out 10 batters while walking only two.
The tone was set for UAB (14-31, 5-17 C-USA) in the top of the first inning. Center fielder Mitch Jones led off with a single and first baseman Matt Womble reached after being hit by Newburn. With no outs and runners at first and second base, right fielder Eric Lyon hit a sharp line drive that was speared by TCU first baseman Walter Olmstead, who then doubled Womble off at first and threw to Robinson at short to complete a triple play.
UAB starter Rusty McIntyre (1-1) struggled in the bottom of the first, allowing three runs on only one hit, but walking four batters. McIntyre lasted only 2/3 of an inning before being replaced by left-hander Joe Yarbrough, who had started the game at designated hitter. Yarbough went on to pitch five and 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits, with three walks and five strikeouts. He also had a double in three at-bats.
TCU (23-24, 14-8 C-USA) scored three times in the first, with third baseman Mike Settle driving in two runs with a single and second baseman Will Lewis driving in one run, also on a single.
The Horned Frogs added a run in the fourth on a single by right fielder Terry Trofholz, which drove in left fielder Chris Meeks.
TCU added three more runs in the fifth as catcher Justin Hatcher drove in one with a groundout and Robinson homered to left off Yarbrough.
The Horned Frogs scored their final run of the game in the seventh as Meeks drove in Lewis with a single.

will play game two of their weekend series Saturday
at
Freshman right-hander Tony Falls (3-2, 1.94 ERA) is the scheduled starter for UAB.
