ROSWELL, Ga. - The UAB men's golf team got off to a tough start at the NCAA East Regional Thursday, as the Blazers shot a 13-over par 301 team score to stand tied for 14th at the 30-team field.
All-American Graeme McDowell was the low Blazer at Ansley Golf Club's Settindown Creek. The junior standout shot an even-par 72 and is in a nine-way tie for 12th individually. Newcomer Ryan Thomas, meanwhile, got off to a fast start at the lengthy 7,119-yard layout before closing at 2-over par 74.
Craig Gordon contributed a 4-over par 76, while the Blazers also took a 79 from Drew Jones. Chad Goodwin had to withdraw from the competition.
Clemson was one of the few teams to score well in good weather conditions. The Tigers fired a 2-under par 286 team score, led by D.J. Trahan. Trahan tallied an impressive 3-under par 69 and has a one shot lead in the individual race.
The Blazers are trying to finish in the top 10, which will advance to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. UAB is only two shots out of a bunched leaderboard, as six teams are tied for sixth.
UAB, which is tied with South Carolina, will try to take advantage of softer conditions Friday morning.
