LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville right fielder Mark Jurich's grand slam home run highlighted a five-run sixth inning as the Cardinals broke open the game and cruised to a 12-3 win over UAB in Conference USA baseball action Saturday at Cardinal Stadium.
Jurich's grand slam off UAB reliever Tony Falls with one out in the bottom of the sixth was followed by a solo shot by first baseman Morgan Bojorquezthat made the score 8-0 and knocked Falls out of the game after three and 2/3 innings.
UAB (15-35, 6-20 C-USA), which scored all three of its runs in Friday's game on solo home runs, scored all three of its runs on Saturday on homers as well. Center fielder Mitch Jones hit a two-run shot off Louisville starter Zach Jackson in the top of the seventh, and right fielder Eric Lyon added a solo shot two batters later.
The Blazers have hit 11 home runs in four games this week - nine of which have been solo shots.
Louisville (34-13, 18-8 C-USA) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as center fielder Dave Williams, Jr., led off with a single and shortstop J.T. LaFountain followed with a walk, and both scored on a two-out single by designated hitter Carlos De La Orsa.
The Cardinals added a third run in the second inning on a Williams' RBI single that drove in catcher Ken Tirpack.
UAB starter Rusty McIntyre (1-2) struggled with his control in his one and 2/3 inning appearance, walking four batters and allowing three runs on five hits. He was replaced by Falls after facing 13 batters.
Falls got UAB out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning by retiring Louisville left fielder Josh Bolen on a lineout to right field, and went on to hold the Cardinals hitless for three and 1/3 innings before running into trouble in the sixth. In that inning he allowed five runs on five hits, including the two home runs, and was replaced by reliever Ryan Huffman.
Louisville would add four more runs in the eighth inning. Third baseman Mike Budak hit a solo home run off Blazer reliever Cody Cillo with two out in the inning, and second baseman Scott Gerlach and LaFountain followed with an RBI double and single, respectively.
Louisville's Jackson (9-1) worked six and 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, with three walks and one strikeout.
