TUSCALOOSA - The UAB men's golf team stands tied for eighth, while All-American junior Graeme McDowell is second individually after second-day action Saturday at the Conrad Rehling Alabama Invite.
The Blazers improved five shots from their opening round, as UAB shot a 6-over par 290 at the 6,999-yard Capstone Club. McDowell, meanwhile, carded his second consecutive 3-under par 68 - putting him one shot out of the lead behind only Kentucky's John Holmes.
Newcomer Ryan Thomas is the next low Blazer, as the Wales native shot a 4-over par 75 to put him in a tie for 33rd individually. The Blazers also took a 74 from Craig Gordon and a 73 from Chad Goodwin , who are each tied for 52nd. Drew Jones rounded out the Blazer corps with his second straight 76.
While the Blazers did fall back one spot as a team from Friday, the squad is only three shots behind fifth-place Michigan State and nine shots behind fourth-place LSU.
McDowell, meanwhile, will be trying for his second straight Alabama Invite individual championship. The Northern Ireland product shot his sixth consecutive sub-par round.
Final round action will take place Sunday.
