CHICAGO- The fifth-seeded Tulane Green Wave captured a 62-35 win over 12th-seeded UAB to advance to the quarterfinal round of the C-USA Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday, March 1 at the DePaul Athletic Center. The Green Wave captured its fifth straight win of the season and will next take on No. 4 DePaul in Saturday's quarterfinal matchup beginning at 6 p.m.
Tulane used a balanced offensive attack with Gwen Slaughter, Teana McKiver and Britt Themann scoring nine points each. Sarah Goree made school history after dishing out eight assists and becoming the first Tulane player to reach 400 assists and 1,000 points in a career.
"I was very pleased with our intensity in both the first and second half," said Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton. "This was very much a team effort. We needed everybody to step up to have a chance in this tournament."
UAB's Natasha Thomas and Christina DeMaio scored six points apiece, while Michelle Smith led off the boards with a game-high nine rebounds.
"We are disappointed that we didn't play a good basketball game," said UAB head coach Jeannie Milling. "Tulane played great defense and a great game. It was a struggle all conference season. It is obviously disappointing, but our young players accomplished some great things this season, which is encouraging."
Tulane shot 44.2 percent from the field (23-of-57), while holding UAB to the lowest point total in tournament history of 35. The previous record was 40 points by South Florida against UAB on Feb. 28, 1997.
UAB finishes the 2001-02 season with a 12-16 record and 4-10 conference mark. Thomas ends the season leading the conference in rebounding with 11.6 per game. She also posted a C-USA-leading 20 double-double performances this year.
