Women's Basketball Team Set To Host Lady Blazer Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB women's basketball team (1-0) will host Chattanooga (1-1) and Alabama State (0-2) in the 2002 Lady Blazer Classic November 29-December 1. On Friday, November 29th at 7 p.m., the Lady Blazers will take on against Chattanooga. On Saturday, the visiting teams will meet, as the Mocs take on the Lady Hornets at 6 p.m. The tournament will wrap up on Sunday, December 1, when UAB hosts Alabama State at 6 p.m.
The Lady Blazers are coming off a dramatic 80-77 win over Jacksonville State on Tuesday night. Natasha Thomas recorded her first double-double of the season, scoring 30 points and grabbing 12 boards. Michelle Smith added 17 points and six rebounds, while Chantell Thomas contributed 12 points.
Chattanooga fell to No. 8 Georgia on November 22, 79-58, but rebounded to defeat Samford, 68-40 on November 25. The Lady Mocs are led by Jennifer Wilson and Katasha Brown who are both averaging 12.0 points per game, while Shamya Sermons leads the team with 8.5 rebounds per game.
ASU is coming off back-to-back losses at the Florida State Seminole Classic in Tallahassee, Fla. In the opening round of the tournament, the Lady Hornets fell to host FSU, 89-61 on November 22. The following day, ASU fell to Florida International, 70-44. Shameka Jackson leads Alabama State in scoring, averaging 21 points per game. Vicky Pouncey is the leading rebounder with eight boards in two games.
