BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-----The UAB women's soccer team (9-9-1, 5-5 C-USA) defeated the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss (6-10-1, 2-7-1), 3-0, Friday night at West Campus Field. With the victory, the Blazers are still in contention for a Conference USA Women's Soccer Tournament berth.
Melissa Sherrell passed the ball to Adrienne Suffridge, who found Jill Knottek for the Blazers' first goal of the match at the 24:09 mark. Suffridge got her second assist of the night in the 43rd minute, passing to Jenny Rynders who put the ball in the top left corner to give UAB a 2-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Blazers played tough defense, allowing the Golden Eagles two shots. At the 60:42 mark, Tara Kidwell headed the ball into the back of the net off a pass from Liz Bosscher for UAB's final goal.
"The girls were excited for tonight," said head coach Paul Harbin. "I think we had the attitude that our backs were against the wall and we had to get this done and they did. Our goal was to get three goals tonight and we achieved that. The hard part is now we have to wait on other results to determine if we keep playing."
