BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-----The UAB Blazers ( 8-8-1, 4-4-0 C-USA) defeated the Jackson State Tigers (1-8) 9-0 in a non-conference game Friday afternoon at West Campus Field. Coming off a loss to Memphis on Sunday, the Blazers came back with a vengeance scoring six goals in the first half. The UAB defense did not allow Jackson State a single shot in the match.
UAB got on board first with an unassisted goal by Adrienne Suffridge in the 8th minute. Tara Kidwell followed Suffridge with another unassisted goal five minutes later to put the Blazers up 2-0. Jenny Rynders got in on the action, scoring in the 19th minute. The scoring continued as Suffridge scored her second goal of the game off assists from Jill Knottek and Laura Skridulis. Aimey Disko scored her first goal of the season in the 28th minute on a header set-up by Jessica Barr and Cindy Penaranda. Kidwell put UAB up 6-0 in the 35th minute on another header off a pass from Disko.
In the second half, Leigh Burton scored her first goal of the season to put the Blazers up 7-0. In the 78th minute, Knottek scored on an assist from Melissa Sherrell. UAB's ninth and final goal came in the 79th minute, when Leslie Marcouiller found Jennifer Calalang for the header.
Adrienne Suffridge lead the Blazers with five shots on goal, two goals and one assist. With Kidwell having two goals on two shots on goal. Knottek and Kidwell are now tied for the team lead in total points with 26 each.
"I am pleased that our kids did a lot of the things that we have been working on and training to do," said head coach Paul Harbin. "They were able to keep their minds focused on what we set out to accomplish today. We played to our level throughout the match, and that was very important."
UAB will host South Florida on Sunday, October 27 at West Campus Field starting at 2:00 pm.
