FUKUSHIMA, Japan - Junior All-American Graeme McDowell (Portrush, Northern Ireland) fired a final-round 5-under par 67 Thursday to take medalist honors at the 2001 Topy Cup--Japan Intercollegiate Golf Championship held at the 7,050-yard, par-72 Tanagura Country Club.
McDowell finished at 10-under par 206, one shot ahead of Taichiro Kiyota at 207 from Nippon Sport Science University. After leading for two days, Tohoku Fukushi University's Yukinobu Watanabe shot a final-round 72 to finish at 7-under par 207 and a third place tie with teammate Takuya Tanguchi.
The Blazers continued their steady play holding on to second place after firing a 288 for a 2-under 862 total. Tohoku Fukushi University ran away with the title finishing at 843, 21-under par. Rounding out the top-five teams were Nihon University (866), Nippon Sport Science University (868) and Pacific (871).
Senior Craig Gordon (Edinburg, Scotland) shot a final-round 73 to finish 10th at 214 while senior Drew Jones (Johnson City, Tenn.) finished tied for 19th shooting a 76 for a 221 total. Junior Daniel Ozley (Birmingham, Ala.) shot a 73 during the finishing round for a 222 total and a share of 22nd place. Sophomore Bobby Spiller (Hampton Cove, Ala.) rounded out the Blazers squad finishing in 38th with a final-round 75 for a 229 total.
Next on the schedule for the Blazers is the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio on Sept. 17-18.
