FUKUSHIMA, Japan - UAB moved into second place after firing an even par 288 in the second round of the 2001 Topy Cup-Japan Intercollegiate Golf Championship here Wednesday. The Blazers have a two-day total of 574 at the 7,050-yard, par-72 Tanagura Country Club.
Junior Graeme McDowell (Portrush, Northern Ireland) continued to lead the Blazers during day two firing a 2-under par 70 after an opening round 69. After two rounds, McDowell is tied for third at 139.
For UAB, senior Craig Gordon (Edinburgh, Scotland) fired a second round 70 while senior Drew Jones (Johnson City, Tenn.) shot a 73. Junior Daniel Ozley (Birmingham, Ala.) shot a 75 and Bobby Spiller (Hampton Cove, Ala.) rounded out the Blazer squad with a 79.
Defending champion Tohoku Fukushi University leads the event at 559. UAB is in second with 574 and SMU is in third at 578.
The final round will be played at 8 a.m. Thurs., Japan time.
