BIRMINGHAM - UAB's men's golf team is earning national attention as they are ranked 19th in the Golfweek preseason rankings.
The Blazers earned national attention earlier this year as they competed in the NCAA Championship at Duke University. This marked the first time in school history the Blazers participated in the championship. UAB finished tied for 12th in the 15 team event.
Junior All-American Graeme McDowell (Portrush, Northern Ireland) and junior Daniel Ozley (Birmingham, Ala.) will lead the Blazers in experience this season. As members of the five-man championship team, both players have continued last season's outstanding play with great summer golf. McDowell was a participant in the Palmer Cup, Walker Cup and U.S. Amateur, while Ozley fought his way through the U.S. Amateur before falling in the third round.
In the Blazers' season opener on Sept. 4-6 at the Topy Cup in Japan, McDowell captured top honors as the Blazers placed second.
Defending National Champion Florida is the No. 1 pick followed by Arizona, Georgia, Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech to round out the top 5.
The Blazers return to action in the Inverness Intercollegiate Sept. 17-18 in Toledo, Ohio.
