UAB golfer Graeme McDowell won his doubles match, but lost in singles competition to the top U.S. collegiate Bryce Molder, on the first day of the Walker Cup competition at the Ocean Forest Golf Club in Sea Isand, Ga.
The match-play competition has the top amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland, against the top amateurs from the United States. The United States team leads the British and Irish team 6 1/2 to 5 1/2.
McDowell, from Portrush, Northern Ireland, teamed with Michael Hoey defeated James Driscoll and Jeff Guinney three-and-1 in alternate shot play. Britain and Ireland led 2 1/2 to 1 /2 after the four doubles matches.
In the afternoon singles play, McDowell took Molder to the wire, falling 2 & 1. Molder played at Georgia Tech and was ranked as the top collegiate golfer in the nation. This is the second time that McDowell has played against Molder in match play. He earlier halved a singles match at the Palmer Cup, which pitted the top U.S. college players against the top players from Europe.
The tournament will conclude Sunday with the same format of four doubles matches and eight singles.
