McDowell Set To Tee It Up At Walker Cup

SEA ISLAND, Ga. - UAB All-American men's golfer Graeme McDowell, who led the Blazers to a school-best 12th place finish at the 2001 NCAA Championship, will participate in the prestigious Walker Cup this weekend for the Great Britain & Ireland squad.
This year's event will take place Saturday-Sunday at the Ocean Forest Golf Club in Sea Island, Georgia. The Golf Channel will televise the Opening Ceremony today at 6:30 p.m. ESPN2 will televise the morning matches on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with its sister station ESPN televising the afternoon matches on Saturday from 3-5 p.m. and the final round matches on Sunday from 4-6 p.m.
McDowell is coming off an excellent season in which he was named to the PING All-American Second-Team, a first for any UAB golfer. He finished tied for 16th as an individual at the NCAA Championship May 30-June 2 at Duke University, shooting rounds of 75-68-74-70=287, to finish 11 strokes back of medalist Nick Gilliam of Florida. McDowell captured two tournament wins in 2001, including the Conrad Rehling Alabama Spring Invite (72-68-72=212) and the Atlanta Intercollegiate (64-69-71=204) for the second consecutive time. McDowell had eight top 10 finishes during the season and completed the year with a 71.3 stroke average.
The Walker Cup consists of 16 singles and eight foursomes (alternate shot) matches between amateurs from the United States and Great Britain and Ireland. The tournament is played in a format similar to the PGA Tour's Ryder Cup.
McDowell will be joined on the GB&I team by Luke Donald, Nick Dougherty, Nigel Edwards, Jamie Elson, Michael Hoey, Richard McEvoy, Stephen O'Hara, Marc Warren and Gary Wolstenholme.
The United States squad consists of Nick Cassini, Erik Compton, James Driscoll, David Eger, Lucas Glover, Danny Green, John Harris, Bryce Molder, Jeff Quinney and D.J. Trahan.
